I was talking to my mom about hair products and I mentioned I was using a conditioner that didn't weigh down my bangs. She was like-"wait, you use conditioner on your bangs. I thought we weren't supposed to do that". So, back in the late 80s/early 90s in order to get the 'claw' (you know that high bang with the curl on top) you wanted your hair nice and frizzy so you could add some height and volume. Thankfully hairstyles are no longer so, um, dramatic and I need a conditioner that controls the frizz!
Over the years I have been cleaning up my beauty routine. I posted earlier about switching to more natural face products, recently I switched to less toxic deodorant (I'm still in the testing phase!) and now I need to focus on what's going in my hair.
At the suggestion of a hair stylist I stopped using shampoo years ago. These days I just put a small dollop in my hand and wash my bangs. I couldn't go completely 'no poo' because my bangs get pretty rough! Once in a blue moon I'll wash it if I've been out rolling around in the dirt.
Finding a great conditioner has been a challenge. There was a meme going around about thick girl hair problems and I was like 'yes!'. If I put my hair up in a bun while it is damp it will still be wet by the end of the day. I bought an expensive brush just for thick hair and I've already broken the handle on it and I regularly pull the bristles out of the brush. I'm surprised my hairstylist agrees to still cut my hair because I think she is exhausted by then end. I currently have about 3 inches on the back of my hair shaved off and no one can tell.
So when Maple Holistics reached out and wanted to send me a bottle of conditioner to try, I'll admit I was pretty skeptical. Holy crap you guys! This stuff works. I tried a bottle of the Silk18 Natural Hair Conditioner and I only needed a dollop, it went through my hair easily and had a light vanilla smell that smelled good. I'm super scent sensitive and I liked the smell of the conditioner. The scent doesn't hang around once your hair dries, which is fine by me.
I have slightly wavy hair and certain conditioners weigh down my waves. The Silk18 gave me shiny beach tousled waves, without any styling. I'm the type of person whose mom calls them when it is going to be below 0 degrees to say maybe you should dry your hair. I'm strictly wash and go and my hair looked great.
I love that the conditioner is made up of natural ingredients (just an FYI if you are strictly vegan, the silk amino acid are "extracted during the silkworms process of creating silk") and it works wonderfully.
Maple Holistics has a free samples program, so go try some hair product!
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary bottle of Silk18 conditioner to try. I have not been paid for my review and all words and opinions are my own.
