To have all these advantages, all this momentum, all these opportunities and then settle for mediocre and then defend the status quo and then worry about corporate politics- what a waste.
From Seth Godin's Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us.
I was cleaning out the notes on my phone and I had written this quote down over a year ago. There were lots of great nuggets of information in the book, but this one really struck me.
We live in an age where almost anything is possible. That in itself can cause paralysis, especially when we are being told to follow our bliss (WTF). Yet, there are so many opportunities to learn new skills and then take that skill set and strike out on your own.
While I call myself an Interior Decorator, I think that my role is so much more complex. I come into people's homes and help them sort through their past so their current and future self can emerge.
Status quo would have me picking out pretty throw pillows, which I do think adds a lovely layer to a home, but it isn't the most important thing.
I try to bring things into the home that are functional, beautiful and bring my client's joy. I strive to find things that reflect who they are, and usually those things are not found at big box stores.
Mediocre was slowly strangling the life out of me until I learned to accept myself and strive for something different.
So, embrace your quirkiness and desire to challenge the status quo. The doors will open and you will find the people you are meant to work with.
