I'm a big supporter of shopping local. One of my tips for making it through the holiday season is to shop less. Don't buy into the insanity and force your family to go shopping at 6AM on 'black friday'. I still can't believe that this nation places shopping over letting people spend time with their family.
As I go through my closets and the piles that have accumulated in my house I am much more discerning about what I want to bring into my home. I choose to buy items that are high quality and meant to last. Apply that principle to gift giving and people will be able to keep your gifts for longer. That's another reason why I shop handmade. I find unique beautiful gifts that delight the person I am giving them too. Yes, sometimes that person is me!
I realize this list is centered on Chicago, but the DIY/Maker movement has swept the nation and many cities and towns have their own markets.
Alapash Home and Terrariums, which is one of my favorite home goods stores, has a pop up shop this season. Or just go to the store. Since you are so close you should stop by Neighborly, which has a ton of great gift giving options for ladies and gentlemen.
The Renegade Craft Fair sets up again for a winter show December 6th and 7th at the Bridgeport Art Center. I was in Bridgeport last weekend and there are tons of fun things to do and good food too!
The 2nd Annual Krampus Fest is Sunday, December 7th. There will be food and fun for the whole family along with an artisan market.
Chicago Art Girls are having a show December 13-14th. You will find tons of unique gifts and treasures.
These are the ones I thought of off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm missing something. Any other fests happening?
